Summer Faith & Fun Activities

Here are some opportunities for sharing time together as a family and sharing your faith with others. Do 12 activities together, mark them off on your summer treasure map and bring it with you to our faith formation gatherings next fall!
  • May 26: CelebrAsian Western Gateway Park
  • June 2: Celebrate Pentecost! Wear red to Mass.
  • June 2: Celebrate Bondurant
  • Participate in a Charity 5K. Support a cause close to your heart
  • June 2-4: Greek Food Fair, Greek Orthodox Church of St. George
  • Take a Walk at the Principal Riverwalk Downtown
  • ​June 10: Pedal Chichaqua Valley Trail 5K run/walk and/or bike ride
  • Learn a new prayer as a family.
  • Visit the Risen Christ Sculpture and the Francis Butterfly Garden at the FDC.
  • June 18-22: Vacation Bible School and VBS for Adults
  • Attend a week of Catholic Youth Camp (CYC).
  • Attend weekend Mass (even on vacation, find a new church to visit with masstimes.org).
  • Visit a church of another faith tradition.
  • June 12-July 21: Volunteer at Altoona Kids Cafe.
  • Donate to Caring Hands Food Pantry. Donations can be left in the food box in the gathering space.
  • June 24: Family Fun Fest & Mass in the Grass
  • Say a prayer before you leave on a trip for safe travels.
  • Visit the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.
  • June 25: Music In the Park - Haines Outdoor Stage
  • Check out Polk County Parks Nature News for fun summer activities.
  • July 9-11: Summer Stay-Cation for Juniorhigh Youth Ministry
  • Attend Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral
  • Visit a local Farmer’s Market-buy local, support local! Here are two nearby markets: Altoona Farmer's Market * Bondurant Farmer's Market
  • July 15-16: Olive Wood Sale after all Masses
  • Visit Reiman Gardens.
  • July 18 Children’s Art in the Garden at Enabling Gardens (Hy-Vee)
  • Pray the Rosary as a family.
  • Visit the State Capitol and learn how you can work for justice.
  • July 16-21: Catholic Heart Work Camp for High School Youth Group
  • Visit the Botanical Garden.
  • July 16-23 Volunteer to help with Family Promise.
  • Polk County Geocaching Parks Challenge
  • July 19- 24: Visit the Polk County Fair
  • Visit the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market - Buy Local!
  •  July 30: Music in the Park - Haines Outdoor Stage
  • August 15: Feast of Assumption of Mary, attend mass at 12 noon or 6 pm.
